my year in lists, stomping on your fingers as your clinging on to the abyss
I've been wondering why it is, that i basically haven't heard anything new in music in a couple of years.
Is it the fact that I'm getting older? could it be that I've finally outgrown new music and am destined to spend my years listening to 90's and 00's alterna rock, as thought it was the new classic rock?
and part of me wants to say that wouldn't be that bad. I mean yo la tengo's I can hear the heart beating as one is still my favorite album of all time, I still love late era pavement, and sdre (the later stuff, not diary so much, though i don't really know why) and tori amos and chirstie front drive. cursive and texas is the reason, the promise ring and the weakerthans, weezer and azure ray.

and part of me wants to rebel against that sort of thinking, just because these were great bands, doesn't mean that there aren't better bands out there, I just have to find them.
but it seems like I've been trying to get into the older bands, calvin johnson and the beat happening, all, fugazi, and i just can't seem to get into them.

I'm pretty much into the bands i thought were cool back when i was in eight grade, Billy Joel, the dead, the moody blues, jimmy buffet (though less now that he's got a country following) the nrps, etc, or the stuff that i was listening to from them till now. I've been trying to listen to more varied stuff: bach, mozart, black flag, etc, but i haven't really been able to get into it.
and i'm sure I'm not the only one, I can still hear a cracker song on the radio, just tune into kbco for a day, they'll play something off of Kerosene Hat. if you listen to ktcl, they'll play something off of one of the good weezer albums or something similarly nastogic every other set. the Metal station that used to be kind of cool? they'll play something from when metalica was good every single set. (not that I am in anyway endorsing any metalica)
but it seems like all of the local radio stations are catering to some class of people, the oldies rock station started playing disoc, the classic rock station started playing "adult album alternative" the indie stations are still playing the very same songs that they were playing way back when.
I've tried going to shows, but they aren't any better now a days than they were back in the good old days, 1/25? chance of success? and even when you hear a band and it's really great, the next time you see them chances are they;ll have totally changed their sound and suck.
so how do you do it? there isn't a 120 min anymore (though matt pinfield has his own station on satellite radio) vh1 just plays reality shows, mtv just plays crappyer versions of i'm rich and just turned 16! look at me! (in all fairness i actually liked on of those old shows that was one of these:( )
