you have to want to get out
you know whats wierd? all these girls, people in general, i've met latety, who haven't been out of the state. the one who took me to the great american beer festival, hadn't been save for to texas twice. this guy at work, who's got to be pushing sixty, hasn't ever been east of the missippi, and has to stop in kanas for the night. another girl on turbo bricks, who is a world traveler, yet hasn't ever been accross the country in a car, and save for her internet friends, doesn't know anyone who has either, she wants to, but in terrifyed of the idea. alright, it's more expensive than it was when i was younger, the frist time i drove to new york, it cost me ninety seven dollars in gas money, in a 67 chevelle, figure a more modern car would get about fifty precent better gas milage, seventy five bucks, today, 2000 miles, 30mpg, gas at 2.15, and it's up to $143, even with gas at 3, and figureing on going 3,000 miles, that's still only three hundred bucks. so it's not about the expence, i can see some people going places, you know france, or cali, or new york, or such on a plane, but even if you do go there (i only wish i could, but alas i'm terrifyed of small spaces with loads of people) but even so, wouldn't you want to get out and about there? i mean places like the park i visted in dc, not teddy rosevelt island or whatever, but the one that was a few miles up the river, i mean it was complealty deserted and incereible, amazing, plus it wasn't accesible unless you had a car. and cd is the most acceible city for no car dewelers. or athens geriga, which was really cool and again completely deserted, there was bus sevice, but not on the day i was there. the expericance of driveing accross the rockies in the dead of winter, spinning my car for three miles or more as there was no treaction on the road, and then suddenly having traction again and conituneing to drive, but slower now. those are things you don't get from an airplane seat, provided you have the money to spend on the airplane tickets... and these are the things i think most of america is missing out on. when i was in high school, and then later college, my friends were for the most part travelers. eric, who was just as likely to hop a plane to china as he was to jump in his parnets rv for a trip to alaska (he did both) chris, my old boss at the pet store, who took a plane to alaska, picked up a old bike from his parnets and rode it to struges. mike (big mike) who would take of for a week, and when he got back he'd tell us where he went, usually cali, but other places as well...ryan who though nothing of picking his friend up in settle, etc. but thinking back, there were other people who weren't such well traveled, pat who's trip to mexico took a quick end when he had two tires blow out, three hours waiting for the tow truck, and he was ready to come back. not the first girl, but the second one i went out with, who was amazed by the tails i would tell of my travels, keeping in mind i was seventeen and had made three cross country trips at this point, i wounder why it was that one failed:P the first girl i went out with was from florida, that ended when her mom called her back:( the people who think colorado? that's out past newark isn't it? (real story, my grandparents neighbors in new york, who had never been off the island) are more comon than the ones who think west virgina? that's a really nice place, inspite of all the coal mineing they do, but you really have to see the cheasapeke bay in the spring.... i mean theo, moved here from west africa (ghana), and the total he has seen is denver, aroua, boulder (once he whent up there by accident), and illions. that's the sum total of this nation that he has seen. and what's even worse, that's all he wants to see. my own problem with flying isn't the small spaces, i learned that from a guy at work, he said if you are the least bit cluasopobic, you learn about it in the mri machine. i have no problem with the MRI, my problem is with the people, i couldn't stand the great america beer festival, because there were to many people all packed into to small a space. MRI machine, it's just me inside there, i'm ok with it, a plane, nope, to many people, and there is no way off.... np: the 101, beth "'cause i'm suposted to leave, the pain on the inside, run away, run away, you have to want to get out, you have to want to get out, you have to want to get out, what once was saved, alone, i swear, alone, i swear, beth's gone alone, beth's gone alone, alone."
